..sightseeing in san fran..

dear finn,

after the wedding on saturday we were pretty exhausted and still a little shaken up from the accident of the century on friday, but we decided it would be best for our mental well-being to get out and about and have some fun! san francisco is full of great sights to see, so we took you out to see san fran for your first time!

first we went down to fisherman's wharf because momma was craving clam chowder in a boudin bread bowl! mmm mmmm...delish! that almost instantly lifted my spirits! you, daddy and nanny goat got something else for lunch - dad was craving fish&chips, so he found a restaurant that looked good and you guys ate there...dad paid $15 for one crab cake! can you believe that?! i sure can't. he said he didn't look at the price on the menu. i can believe that! he said it was good, but not $15 good. :)
after eating lunch we drove around san fran for awhile...we drove down the famous lombard street in our huge ford f150 rental truck. yes, we rented a truck. dad said it was the only rental available at the time, but i am not sure i believe him! i think he just likes to drive trucks. ;) we drove through golden gate park and then went over to the sight-seeing area by the golden gate bridge.

then we met up with aunt tiff and uncle kev, who were with dad's cousins steph, colby and baby keller stringham...we caravaned through san fran together...drove over the golden gate bridge and stopped at the viewing area on the other side. then we drove a few miles away to muir woods and took a stroll through the woods. it was b.e.autiful and you loved it! you loved it just as much as you loved the hike we went on a few weeks ago...maybe even more since the trees were even bigger and taller! after our stroll through muir woods we went back to oakland and went to dinner at a delicious pizza joint called zachary's.
it sure was a fun day, filled with many sights and good company. it was just what i needed to take my mind off of the rest of our stressful weekend. and you, my dear, were a champ! you slept pretty much the entire day (boy oh boy do you love to be in the car!). i am happy that part of our weekend was fun. even though you probably don't know the difference between the day of the horrible train accident and the day we went sightseeing in san francisco, i sure know the difference and let me tell you, sightseeing day>train accident day by far!

love you mr. man. maybe we will get back to the bay area one day. i am pretty scarred from this trip, but hopefully in time that scarring will fade and we will venture back out there once again. :)

love,
mom

..congrats aunt tiff&uncle kev..

dear finn,

the whole reason we were going to the bay area in the first place was for aunt tiffany's wedding! now, we love aunt tiff very much. she is such a great example to everyone, she is so beautiful and seems to have everything figured out. she is very responsible and mature, she knows where she is going and what she is doing. she is very faithful in the gospel and true to what she believes. she had a very profound influence on your dad and i am grateful to her every day for the role model she is to so many people around her.

ever since i have known your aunt tiff she has caught the eye of many men. like i said, she is so pretty, very confident and she is a lawyer. all these things make her quite the catch! no guy ever seemed to be good enough for her, though. she would go on tons of dates when she lived in utah, but for one reason or another, she never liked any of the guys enough to keep them around for very long. then she moved to san fran, and for the first year or so things were the same...would go on a date every now and then but never found anyone she liked. she was also incredibly busy for work and just didn't have time to spare on people she knew she wasn't interested in.

finally, finally she met someone who fit the bill. old enough, handsome enough, professional and a good lds boy. "pixar," as she called him (since he works for the animation company, pixar) was her home teacher and i think she was smitten by him from day one. when she came home for christmas last year she told us about this strapping young man, and from the sparkle in her eyes i could tell she was in love and i said to her, dead serious i said this, "i think you are going to marry him." and marry him she did! they got engaged back in january. your dad and i were the first to find out about this blessed engagement, and we couldn't be happier for her.

dad and i met uncle pix back in april, just two days before you were born! you were supposed to be here by then, but you just decided to take your sweet time coming into this world, so they missed you by about 8 hours! they were eating breakfast at our house the day you were born...i was having contractions the entire time. unfortunately they had a plane to catch, so they had to wait until their wedding day to meet you. :) uncle pix is such a great guy and we are so happy to see aunt tiff so in love.

the wedding ceremony in the temple was beautiful. the temple president sealed them, and he happened to be president howard w. hunter's son. he talked a lot about family and posterity and sacrificing for your children...all things that had been on my heart and mind from the day before. it was beautiful. later that night they had a beautiful reception at their home. you screamed through the ring ceremony, so unfortunately we saw none of that. oh well. ;)
even though our journey out there was horrendous, i am still happy we were able to be there for aunt tiffany and uncle kevin on their special day. :)

love,
mom

..nice to meet you..

dear finn,

after we finally made it to oakland, california last weekend, our trip was bound to get better after the terrible day we had the day before. i was so excited for you to meet your aunts, uncles and cousin. however, because i was still so overwhelmed and shaken up from the events of the previous day, the morning wasn't quite as good as i wold have liked.

when we arrived things were pretty hectic. aunt wendy was busy making the cake for aunt tiffany's reception. aunt tiffany and uncle kevin were busy getting ready for their wedding ceremony, which was in 2 hours from the time we got there. dad was busy being interviewed by a san francisco news station, and nanny goat was busy helping the cameraman interviewing him by holding the microphone. but even as hectic as things were, everyone stopped what they were doing to come meet you and get to know you a little.

unfortunately i didn't get any pictures of them meeting you for the first time, but i did get a few later that night and the next day. everyone thought you were just absolutely adorable (no surprise there!) and they all wished we would have been able to spend more time together. hopefully we will get to spend more time with them when they come here for tiff and kevin's utah reception.
i know these guys all love you soooooooo much mr. finn. :-)

..your first - and possibly last - train ride..

dear baby finn,

we took a trip to oakland, california last weekend for your aunt tiffany's wedding. we had been looking forward to this trip for a while, for a few different reasons...1) it was the first time you would be meeting your aunts, tiffany and wendy, your uncles, dave and kevin, and your cousin shaya, 2) we were so excited for your aunt tiffany to tie the knot and we couldn't wait to attend the ceremony and share her special day with her, and 3) we were excited to travel with you for the first time and take you on your first vacation!

now, in this day and age when people travel, most people like to take the airplane. not your dad though! he had never ridden a train before, and he was dead set on riding the train to california. a month or so ago when we booked our train tickets i thought it sounded like a fun idea, but as our departure date drew closer and closer, the thought of taking the train sounded more and more dreadful. first of all, the train ride is 17 hours long. to drive to california takes about 11 hours, so i am not sure why it takes so dang long for the train to get there! second of all, trains (like planes and busses) are filthy dirty, and i am a bit of a germaphob. the thought of sitting on that flithy dirty train for 17+ hours sounded horrific, especially with  my two month old baby! third of all, riding the train to california and finding another form of transportation to come home was becoming more and more expensive...neither your dad or i realized how expensive a one-way plane ticket home was, and you'd have to be crazy to believe i was willing to take the train both ways.

the day our train was leaving i begged dad for 30 minutes to reconsider taking the train there. i told him i would be willing to take a trip on the train another time, but i just really reallllllllly did not want to take it this time. it was his dream to take the train, however, and unfortunately for us he would not budge and we were forced to take it with him. we were supposed to be at the train station a half hour early to check in, so we got to the train station at 10:45 p.m. on thursday june 23rd, and our trip was all downhill from there.

due to flooding in nebraska (where our train was coming from) the train was delayed three hours. luckily for us we don't live very far from the train station, so we checked in...checked some of our baggage in...and came back home and slept for a couple hours before the train arrived in salt lake city. we were back at the train station by 2:00 a.m. like we were supposed to be...waited for another 45 minutes for the train to get there, and were finally on board by 3:00 in the morning. it was a long and exhausting night!

the next morning we all woke up fairly early...you and dad slept on the bottom bunk together and were awake by 6:30 or so. when i woke up you two were just chattin' away, you were smiling at him and so happy. it was so incredibly cute! :) i got out of bed, fed you, then we went to the "cafeteria cart" to eat breakfast...french toast, which was actually pretty good. after breakfast we went back to our sleeper cart and just sat and enjoyed the scenery for an hour or so. i started to get a bit sleepy so i decided to lay down while you and dad went to the observatory cart to get a better view of everything. i don't know how long i had been sleeping for when all of the sudden a big jolt nearly knocked me out of bed (the top bunk, mind you!).

immediately i jumped down and started running toward the observatory cart to find you and dad. i didn't even know what had happened to us at that point, all i knew was it was scary and i wanted to make sure you guys were okay. on my way through the halls i heard people saying that our train just hit a truck and that we would be there for a while. it didn't take long to find you and dad because dad started running back toward me the moment the accident happened. we grabbed some things and got off the train to get a look at what had happened. all we saw was smoke and fire coming from one of the train cars. that is when it first set in that something really bad had happened.

shortly after, everyone evacuated the train. some people had been badly injured and were being carried off the train by other people. it was a bit chaotic for a good 30 minutes. at first everyone just hung out right outside the train. that is where there was the most shade and we definitely wanted you to be in the shade. then we were given orders to go sit on the other side of the train - the side that had no shade. then the emergency crews started to show up and we were told to walk toward the road (about a 1/2 mile away). dad went back onto the train to grab all of the belongings we were able to carry on with us when we boarded, then we started our trek to the road. a half of a mile doesn't sound like a long way to go, but with two diaper bags, your carseat, dad's suitcase, our clothes for the wedding (which were in a hanging sack), and a case of water (which dad took on his way off the train, bless his heart) a half a mile started to seem like a long way! dad forgot to get your stroller when he went back to get everything, so he went back another time to get that (and thank goodness he did because the rest of our trip would have been pretty difficult without it).

getting to the road seemed to take forever. after dad got all of our stuff off the train he thought it would be okay to leave us for a bit and go take pictures and record what was going on around us. i took you and anyhting else i could manage, which wasn't much, and continued walking toward the road. i heard one of the train employees say that the smoke coming from the train was toxic and that we needed to get as far away from it as soon as possible, and that is when i pretty much lost it (suprisingly i had been very calm up until then). all that i could think about after hearing that was you and your two month old lungs and how the smoke was supposedly toxic. what if you had inhaled too much smoke and didn't survive this? my precious baby boy who i love more than anything in the world...my pride and joy...my greateast accomplishment...how would i go on with my life if anything ever happened to you? i don't think i could. finally dad came back to us...i handed you to him and told him to get you to a paramedic asap. dad ran to the road, holding you in your carseat, and had you checked by a paramdeic. meanwhile, i was trying to trek through the sand/dirt/rocks/bushes pushing your stroller and pulling dad's suitcase, balling my eyes out! i am sure i was quite the scene. it wasn't long after that some nice people walking by offered to help me, and i had no choice but to let them.

i started running to the road to check on you. the paramedic who checked you said you seemed fine but to keep a close eye on you in case you started coughing. i had another paramedic check you out and she said the same thing. so i just held you in my arms and prayed that you would be okay. it was getting very hot outside and you were still wearing your footed pajamas from the night before. we poured water on a washcloth and wrapped that on your neck and head to keep you cool. you and i were treated very well by everyone around us. people offered to give up their seats in the shade so that we could sit there. a paramedic kindly offered for us to sit in the front seat of an air-conditioned ambulence, and i couldn't pass up that offer! you started to get hungry, so there we sat, in the front seat of an ambulence with the a/c blasting, while you were nursing. i was just so grateful to be out of the hot sun and chaos, able to keep a better eye on you.

you did great during the whole fiasco baby finn. you didn't cry once, and that is not an exaggeration. after you finished eating you just sat and talked to me with a smile on that adorable face. we changed your diaper and switched ambulences (the one we were in was getting ready to take someone to the hospital). finally busses arrived, which would be taking us to the nearest city. the first bus was reserved for the elderly and mothers with infants...so we took our seat on that bus and off we went toward fallon, nevada. we were told that we would be shuttled to the high school auditorium, and that from there amtrak (the train company) would update us on the situation and let us know what they would be doing to help us reach our final destination. turns out, however, that since our bus had so many elderly people on it, they took us to the hospital where we would all be checked out by doctors. i was actually very grateful for that, because i just wanted the peace of mind of knowing that you really were okay. the hospital provided us with snacks while we waited for the doctors to come check on us. after being deemed healthy and good to go, we went down to the cafeteria where there were sandwhiches, chips, crackers and drinks. then we boarded another shuttle that took us right across the street to the school auditorium that everyone else was being shuttled to.

inside the auditorium there were tons of volunteers who showed up to help when they heard about the train accident. when we walked in, a lady who saw how young you were instantly said, "you have a baby, what do you need?" i said, "i think we are pretty good on everything for now, i have enough diapers and wipes to last us until we can get to a store." the lady said, "no, no, i want to help, i will come check on you in a second." so we took a seat in the gym, and a few minutes later that lady came back and asked what size diapers you wear. she was determined to help us out! i told her that i really thought we had enough for the time being, but she said, "honey, i have two kids, and let me tell you, boys shit like there's no tomorrow!" haha sorry for the bad word, but it was pretty funny! about 20 minutes later she came back with a whole stack of diapers for you, and thank goodness she did because turns out both of us would be needing them later in the day. ;)

while we were sitting in the gym a bunch of different people came up to me to check on us and tell us what we needed to do. we had to fill out a little form so that amtrak would know we made it safely off the train. we also had to write down our address and contact information, along with the luggage that we checked in when we boarded the train so that eventually amtrak would know where to send our luggage. sadly for you and me, everything of ours was in a suitcase on the train, so you and i had nothing. :( i knew that i shouldn't be worrying about our belongings during a time like that, but i couldn't help but be a little bugged that we didn't have anything. plus, i packed all of your cutest clothes, and i was worried that the luggage cart may have caught fire and that we would lose all of our stuff forever.

i don't know how long we were sitting in the auditorium for. when we first got there i updated dad's status on his facebook page (i couldn't write anything on mine because i didn't have a phone - it had broken the day before, as luck would have it). i wrote, "we were on the amtrak train that was involved in a fatal accident. becky, finn and i are doing okay, and just so thankful to be alive." well, little did i know that within a few minutes time dad would be contacted by reporters who wanted to do interviews with him...all because i wrote the word "amtrak" on his facebook status. :) dad, who we love dearly, started getting all caught up in the attention of this and became obsessed with doing interviews. he was on the phone with reporters all afternoon, answering their questions and trying to send them footage he had taken from his phone of the accident.

while dad was busy becoming famous, i just sat in the gym with you...you started to get hungry again so i fed you a bottle. a nice lady named rowena kept coming up to us to make sure we were okay. eventually she asked me where we were from, and where we were going. when i told her we were from salt lake city, utah, she asked if we were members of the church. turns out they were too, and from then on she seemed to be very interested in us and our situation. she asked how we were going to get to oakland. by that point, amtrak informed us they would be providing busses to take us to our final destinations. well, dad and i were not to keen on taking the bus. we didn't know how long it would take with all the stops they would be making, and we needed to be in oakland by 10:30 the next morning if we wanted to make it to the wedding. so i told rowena that we would probably just take a bus to reno (which was about an hour away from where we were) and that from there we would rent a car and drive the rest of the way to oakland. rowena then did one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me - she offered to give us a ride to reno. normally i do not like to impose on people, but in this case i accepted her help. i told her that would be wonderful if she could. so she went and found her husband (who was helping other people), told him we needed to get to reno and that she offered for them to drive us. he was just as generous and kind as she was and said that he would love to. they went home to get their truck, came back 20 minutes later and off we went with brett and rowena hunsinger to reno, nevada.

the hunsinger's were such nice people. i really enjoyed talking to them during our hour-long ride to reno. they were probably some of the most kind-hearted, genuine people i have ever met. dad had exchanged phone numbers with them for some reason, and later that night (about midnight, actually) they called us to make sure we got to where we were going safely. how kind is that?! they dropped us off at the reno airport, made sure there was nothing else they could do for us and then turned back around and drove home. i was so thankful to the hunsinger's for their generosity and hospitality, especially during a time when i was so stressed out and overwhelmed with all that had happened to us.

we rented a car at the reno airport, which turned out to be another fiasco. dad's drivers licence expired back in april, and for some reason he only had a temporary drivers licence. but he forgot it in his truck back home. so without a current drivers licence, we were unable to rent a car in his name. i always thought you had to be 25 years old to rent a car, and i am a little less than a month away from turning 25, so i asked the gentleman working at enterprise if he could bend the rules in this case. he informed me that you don't have to be 25, but you do need a credit card in your name, which i don't have. long story short, we had to call american express and make me an authorized user on dad's credit card, the enterprise man still had to bend a rule or two and finally we were able to rent a car. to rent a car one-way (from reno to oakland) is quite pricey! cost us nearly $300. but time was ticking and we didn't want to miss the wedding...not when we had miraculously made it this far. so we got in the car and headed toward oakland.

the drive from reno to oakland is a beautiful one, however it is a bit scary, especially at night. by the time we got on the road it was nearly 9 o'clock, and we hadn't been driving for very long when dad started getting sleepy. so we switched places and i drove. i wasn't tired...i think i was still running on adrenaline...but the twists and turns of the road combined with how narrow the lanes are, plus the fact that we were driving through mountains (where there were probably deer and other animals who cross the road and cause accidents) made me a little nervous to be driving so late at night. i couldn't help but feel there was something trying to prevent us from making it to this wedding...first our train was delayed 3 hours...then the train gets in a terrible, once in a million accident...the last thing we needed was to get in a car accident. so we decided to get a hotel room in a little town about 30 minutes east of sacramento, and boy was i glad to have that day over with. laying in bed that night with all of us safe and alive, i felt such a feeling of relief...relieved that we made it through such a long, exhausting and horrific day. it was definitely one of the worst days of my life.

the next morning i woke up bright and early. or maybe i should say you woke me up bright and early! ;) we were both still on utah time, let's put it that way. so i fed you, then i jumped in the shower (my first shower in 4 days haha, we won't even get into that!). i usually don't like taking a shower without my own shampoo/conditioner, body and face wash, etc. but in this case i was thrilled to get cleaned off in any way i could. :) i woke dad up after i was finished, he showered, we packed up and hit the road after enjoying our complementary continental breakfast. the drive from that point forward was nice and smooth. we stopped at a target to buy some clothes for me (we stopped at an old navy in reno the night before to buy some clothes for you), as well as essential toiletry items...shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste/brush, mascara, deoderaunt, etc. etc. we finally made it to kevin's house in oakland by 10:30 a.m. saturday, june 25th. everyone was so relieved that we made it there safe, alive and in time for the wedding.

what we know about this train accident now is that the truck ran into the train. we still don't know why the truck hit the train, and we may never know because the truck driver was killed in the accident, along with six other people. 20 people were seriously injured and as of now 28 people are still missing. they could have been in one of the two passenger cars that were hit by the truck, they may have left the scene of the accident without telling anyone they made it out okay, or they may have never gotten on the train to begin with. this type of accident is a 1/1,000,000 chance. trains almost always hit cars/trucks etc., cars and trucks rarely run into trains.

since this accident i have been plagued with fear thinking about all these "what if's". the truck that hit us was a semi tractor-trailer carrying two empty trailers. what if the trailers had been full? we most likely would have de-railed and the accident would have been much worse. what if the truck had hit us a few seconds later, or if the train was going a few mph faster? he may have hit the observatory car that you and dad were in, or the sleeper car that i was in, and one of us might not be here today. what if you had inhaled too much of that toxic smoke? there are so many things that could have happened, it scares me to death to think how close we were to being seriously injured or dead. but heavenly father has a plan for us and we are here for a reason. the day the accident happened i heard people all around me saying stuff like, "it just wasn't our time to go." after thinking about it i know they were right. our work here on this earth isn't done yet, we still have things to do. but over the past few days i have realized more than ever before in my life how truly precious life is. it is a gift. one that, too often, we take for granted.

i am very grateful for dad, and for his strength, courage and his level-head. he is a great person to have by your side in a crisis, because he doesn't lose focus, he doesn't panic. he stayed calm and collected that whole day, which helped keep me calm. i am grateful that you were with him when the truck hit the train...you were in good hands. dad knew just what to do to get you to the safest place possible. you are lucky to have such a great dad finn, you really are. :)

i am so grateful that i am here today to write this terrible story on your baby blog. as much as i wish this accident is one that we had never been involved in, i must remind myself that everything happens for a reason. i love you more than anything in the world, and if it is possible i love you now more than i ever have. words cannot express how grateful i am for the opportunity i have been given to be your mommy mr. finn. it's weird, because in situations like this, being a mom makes everything 10x worse, and 10x better...all at the same time. when the accident happened i was 10x more scared because i was worried for your safety and health and well-being. but all those same things - protecting you and doing all i could to keep you safe and healthy - were what got me through the day. you are an anchor for me, and i don't know what i would ever do without you.

i love you more than words finn, and will never be able to express how thankful i am to have you here today.

..daddy's first fathers day..

dear finn,

today was your daddy's FIRST father's day, thanks to YOU!! he doesn't really like to write much, but if he did i know he would tell you that you are his pride and joy, and that since you were born he has loved every second of being a father.

daddy loves coming home from work every day so that he can spend quality time with you. he loves to feed you and hold you in his arms or on his lap while he is watching tv or playing on the computer or iPad. he says his favorite time of day with you is first thing in the morning after you have woken up and eaten...you are always super smiley and chatty, and dad just loves to sit there and talk to you. :-) he also loves late at night when you are just getting ready to go to bed. he will feed you and sing to you while changing your dipey and usually you just sing right along with him, it is so stinkin' cute!
dad is always so concerned about your comfort and well-being. if he sees me holding you in a way that he thinks might be hurting your tummy or other parts of you he will kindly say something to me in your defense. the other day i brought your playmat out on the patio and set you on it and he said, "that looks pretty uncomfortable for him to be on the cement like that..." (he didn't realize that the part of the mat you were laying on was on the rug :-)). whenever i strap you in your carseat he checks to make sure it isn't squeezing your balls too much! ha he is the same way when cleaning you while changing your diaper - always being careful not to hurt you down there! ;-)

back in july when we found out i was pregnant, but before we knew whether you were a boy or a girl, people would always ask us what we wanted (a boy or a girl?), and very enthusiastically dad would always say "a boy!" he wanted a little buddy to go wheeling with, camping with, shootin the guns with, etc. etc. he also thought it would be nice to have a boy first so that he could watch over and protect the younger siblings one day. his smile was from ear to ear the day we found out you were a boy!

i don't think i have ever seen dad quite as happy, proud or excited as he was the day you were born. he had a glow to him that was very obvious to me and so many others. when we went to the hospital to see if my water had actually broken and the nurse told us you would be born that day, dad excitedly said, "really?! like we will for sure be born today?! about how long do you think until he comes out...a couple hours? more?" ha ha he was ecstatic!!! and every day since he has kept that proud glow. you mean the world to him mr. finn. :-)
i can already see that you have a very special relationship with your dad and i am excited to see the bond you have with him grow even stronger as you get older. i think you two will grow to be the best of friends. :-)

you have two grandpa's who love you more than you'll ever know. grandpa jeff and grandpa jimbob light up whenever they see you, or even just a picture of you! i try to send them both a picture of you once a day, and both of them have commented on how it is the highlight of their day. we see grandpa jeff about once a week and it means the world to him to be able to hold you and feed you a bottle. grandpa jimbob has been out of town for a couple months, but he calls all the time to make sure "master finnigans" is doing well.
you are also very lucky to have two great-grandpa's who love and adore you. you mean the world to great-grandpa powell. you are that special "powell" great-grandson he has been patiently waiting for to carry on the family name. he prayed for us..."in the temple" as he says...that we would have a boy. he was about as excited as your dad was when he found out you were a boy, and you can see on his face and in his smile how proud he is to have you as his great-grandson, he loves you so much! we take you up to see your great-grandpa hansen nearly every sunday and he thinks you are just so adorable! last week, as we were leaving, he said "that's a pretty good lookin' baby you have there." to which i replied, "he has good genes, doesn't he?!" i know he, too, is so proud to call you his great-grandson. :-)
i hope you will always know how loved you are by all these men. you are one lucky little boy mr. finn...very lucky indeed.

..the great outdoors..

dear finn,

today we took you on your first hike, and let me just tell you...you LOVED it! daddy carried you in the baby bjorn, which you didn't seem to mind at all even though your head is still a little bit of a bobble head. actually, not being able to hold your head up completely may have worked to your advantage because your neck just rested back on the carrier and you stared up at the big huge trees and pretty blue sky the whole entire time! well, up until you fell asleep, that is. the hike we took was short, but very beautiful, and we are hoping to make a habit out of going on a hike once or twice a week. now that we know how much you loved it we really have no excuse!
happy hiking to us!

..the italian place..

dear finn,

yesterday you, grandma cindy and i took a trip up to logan to introduce you to my good friends at the italian place! the italian place is the sandwich shop i worked at for a few years while i was going to school up at utah state. that job was by far my favorite job i have ever had, my two bosses, peggy chanson and john harder, are by far my favorite bosses i have ever had, and the sandwiches are by far my favorite sandwiches i have ever had! haha it's safe to say i love pretty much everything about the italian place!

when i first started working there i was terrified of john. he is a very scary and intimidating person if you don't know him. people call him the "sandwich nazi" because he is so scary. it is mostly all in good fun, but i did see him get really mad at someone one time, and that was not fun! he makes fun of pretty much everyone who comes in to get a sandwich...whether because they order white bread with no veggies or anything exciting on their sandwhich, or because of the way they are dressed/do their makeup/what their boyfriend looks like etc. etc., he just loves to tease people all day long and i was no exception.

like i said, for the first couple months i was terrified of him. he is a very demanding person, and in his opinion there is only one right way to do a job - his way. he liked the lettuce chopped a very specific way, when his vegetables got too low (not empty, just too low) he liked them replaced, same with the eggs, condiments, meat, etc. there was a certain way to do the dishes if he was around. if we didn't do it his way, we would hear it from him. i don't remember what the reason was, but he made me cry one time! i think i was just so stressed out from him yelling at everyone all the time!

once i got used to his personality and the way he expected things to be done, i absolutely fell in love with him. i would usually open with him which meant i was in there alone with him for a half an hour before we actually opened the store, and that half an hour was often my favorite part of the whole day. i would tell him everything that was going on in my life...what i was learning in school, the argument i had gotten in with your dad (who was my boyfriend at the time), what we were doing in chi omega, drama with grandma and grandpa, etc. he loved hearing all i had to say, and he would always offer me his opinion and some advice to go along with it. i guess i am very dramatic when i tell stories, and john loved listening to me tell them. i really think he looked forward to it, because when i walked through the door he would instantly ask me what i had for him that day. :)

peggy was my other boss, and i love her too. she was a chi omega when she was at utah state, and once we both figured that out (that we were both chi omegas) we instantly bonded. we also share the same birthday! peggy and john were once married and they started the restaurant together i think. their marriage didn't last long, but all these years later they are still business partners. they would often bicker, which was quite entertaining, but for the most part they got along well. the italian place catered lots of events up in logan and the surrounding areas, which sometimes made for long days and nights at work, but since i was usually the only girl working, peggy would let me leave first! i think this sometimes made the guys mad. :) also, because i was the only girl, there were certain jobs/chores that i never had to do, such as cutting the cheese and meat, changing out the soda, lifting and carrying heavy loads, etc. i think peggy loved having me there because she needed another girl with all that testosterone! haha

there were a bunch of guys who came and left while i worked there - jack, taylor, bean (peggy's son andrew), alex (peggy's other son), and some others that i am forgetting - but there was one guy who has been there forever...riley brown. i wouldn't be surprised if he took over once john and peg retire! i was scared of riley for a good portion of the time that i worked there! he was kind of my boss in a way too since he had worked there so long and knew everything, and whenever john and peg were both out of town, riley was the one in charge. i had a lot of fun with riley once i got to know him better, but that took a good year! he reminds me of john in a lot of ways, in that they are both extremely opinionated and can be very intimidating. when it was just riley in charge, work was a lot less stressful and much more relaxed, but we still got things done and worked hard. i really always enjoyed talking to riley and hearing his opinions and views on matters in life. :)

these three people - john, peggy and riley - were what made working at the italian place so much fun. i loved the basic parts of the job - chopping vegetables, wrapping sandwiches, ringing people in at the cash register, as well as getting to know many of the customers and talking to them etc. but it was mostly the people i worked with that made that job unforgettable. i had to quit when your dad and i got married and moved to ogden, and that last day i spent with them was one sad day for me. i cried and cried and cried all not long! i remember i was getting my bridals taken the next day so i kept trying to tell myself that i was going to have puffy eyes for my pictures if i didn't stop crying, but i couldn't stop! even though i was so excited to marry your dad and start a new chapter of my life, leaving my good friends at the italian place was so hard. i still dream about them quite often, and i try and go visit as much as i can...and when i do they never fail to help me remember why i love them all so much. :)

they were all very excited to meet you. john took a look at you, said, "he's cute, but what kind of a name did you give him?! don't you want him to have a chance in life?!" haha he also said he will like you a lot more when you are older and can work! :) oh john, gotta love him. peggy thought you were just adorable and riley said, "wow, he's cute. a lot of newborn babies are really ugly but he isn't at all!" riley also commented on how weird it was to see me with a baby.

we visited with them for a while and then had some lunch. john kept trying to get some good stories out of me, but i didn't really have any drama to share with him! in true john fashion, when we were taking the picture he asked if he could grab my breast (he has ALWAYS verbally sexually harassed me but it's all in good fun) and when he asked what i wanted to eat i said, "john, why don't you surprise me." he said, "sure i'll surprise you, let's leave finn here with your mom and we'll get outta here and i will give you the surprise of your life!" haha omg he cracks me up. he always told me that the day i came into work with red hair was the day he would know i was leaving your dad and wanted to be with him. sorry, this is probably too much information for your innocent baby blog, but i have to write it all down so i don't forget these memories. :)

i am interested to see how you like your first sandwich from the italian place, i am not sure if it has completely gone through my system and into your milk yet. it was a very delicious sandwich, but also very spicy which you tend to not love. we will see! i hope hope hope that by the time you are old enough to actually eat a sandwich that john will still be working there, and peggy and riley too, because i really want you to get to know them and love them, just like i do.

i love you little man, and i am so happy you got to meet my dear friends from the italian place - you have something in common with them...you both changed my life forever (but you have more than them :))!

..first time @ lagoon..

dear baby finn,

today we took you to lagoon for the first time! grandpa jeff's company party was being held there, so we got in for free! now i will be honest, i am not a huge fan of lagoon. i don't like the looooooong lines or waiting in them in the heat of summer. everything is waaaay over-priced and half the roller coasters look like they are going to fall apart any day. but grandpa jeff really wanted us to come so that he could hang out with YOU all day! so we went, and i think you had a grand old time. you love being outside...it puts you to sleep i think, because you slept for quite awhile today. when you were awake you were happy as can be! i had to nurse you in public...that was interesting, to say the least. i think it will be awhile before i attempt that again! grandpa jeff won lots and lots of prizes for you...he loves to spoil all of us, and especially you! he pushed you in your stroller all day long and loved spending time with you. i know it just made his whole day that we took you to lagoon!
when you get older i have a feeling you are going to love going there every summer...maybe we will make a tradition out of going with grandpa jeff?!

love ya little man!

..two months old..

dear finn,

you are two months old today! boy oh boy, the past two months have gone by way too fast. back in april when we had your two week check-up, the lady at the appointment desk said that the doctor didn't need to see you again until you were two months old, and i remember thinking that seemed like forever! how was i supposed to know if everything was okay with you and if you were getting enough to eat, etc. etc. but here we are, two month's later and everything is a-okay. not just okay, everything is perfect! we made it little guy!

finn, you are such a wonderful boy. i hope you will always remember that as you grow up, and in case i fail to tell you enough, i am writing it down here so you will know. i have been lucky enough in my life to love many people. i have two wonderful parents who I love very much(your grandma cindy and grandpa jimbob!), i have had many friends whom i have loved and still love, i fell in love and am still in love with your daddy. i love your older brothers, duke and claus, more than i ever thought possible. but never in my life have i known a love like the love i feel for you. you are my everything. the other day i don't remember exactly what was wrong with you, but i am pretty sure you had a tummy ache and i tried and tried to calm you down but for a good ten minutes you screamed. and during those ten minutes i wasn't angry or upset with you...i wasn't annoyed or bothered that you were disrupting my day by balling your eyes out...i felt so helpless and sad, and i would have done anything to take away your pain. i have a feeling that is how it will be every time you cry for the rest of your life. i would sacrifice anything to make life better for you.

i want you to know i have a strong testimony of the gospel of jesus christ. i know he is our savior, and that he sacrificed himself so that we could return to live with him and our heavenly father again someday. my testimony of the love that our savior has for us has grown leaps and bounds in the two months since you came to this earth and been a part of our family. like i said above, i would do anything to take away your pain and sadness, that is how much i love you. i know our savior must love us that much and probably even more, because he sacrificed himself so that we could endure the pain and suffering that would come as a result of living here on the earth. my testimony of eternal familes is stronger now than ever before. i know we will be a family forever, and i am so grateful for that. i don't know what i would do if i didn't know i will be your mommy for time and all eternity. :)

in this past month you have grown tremendously, both physically and mentally. i am sure i have written this in other "letters," but i will write it all again...as a recap of your past month.

when you were around 5 or 6 weeks you started talking, aka "cooing." you first started doing this while laying on your playmat and looking at all the colorful toys hanging above you. now you will talk to us...a lot of times i hear you jabbering away when you are just laying in your crib. i figure you must be talking to andy the elephant and the animals on your mobile and the animals in your pictures hanging above your crib. :)

you started smiling around week 7, and each and every day since then you have smiled more and more throughout the day. the best is when you smile while we are talking to you or singing to you...it just melts my heart. you have a darling smile already, and i know you always will (because both your mom and dad have great smiles, if i do say so myself!).

you started to grab the animals hanging above your playmat toward the end of week 7. you also will hold on to my shirt when i am nursing you. you like to lay on your back and hold your hands in fists up in the air. don't know what it means, but i am sure it means something develpment-wise. you also kick your legs and flail your arms a lot, which must mean you are getting stronger. your neck is getting much stronger...you can almost hold your head up without anyone supporting it. you have almost rolled over a couple times. i don't know if it is a fluke or if you are actually close to rolling over! you aren't a huge fan of tummy time. you tolerate it for a few minutes, then you just get really fussy.

you started sleeping through the night two days before you turned 8 weeks old. thank you baby finn, that's all i gotta say about that! ;) jk. you sleep from 11:30-7, give or take a half an hour or so. today at your dr's appointment the doctor asked how long your first stretch is at night. when i told him you have slept from about 11:30-7 the past week, his jaw dropped and he said, "that is wonderful! that is unheard of for a two month old. what a blessing for you guys!" so thank you finn...please keep doing it!

you are still great when we go out in public. we were at one of the stores in the mall that we frequent (meaning all the ladies who work there know you!) and one of the ladies said, "does he ever make a peep? i don't think i have ever heard one noise come out of him!" truth is, usually you don't make a peep until we get home! ha i think it must mean you already have manners - you know there is a time and a place for being fussy, and while we are out in public is not it!

you are sometimes kind of dramatic while eating. if i am nursing you and i switch sides, you stometimes flip your lid and make a high-pitched squeal in protest. you do not like my right side, and that is when you get fussy. if we are bottle feeding you and we pull the bottle out for a second or two to burp you or reposition, you sometimes squeal in protest also. you must just love your mommy's milk and you hate when we take it away while you are still hungry! ;)

you love your changing table and getting your diaper changed. if you are ever fussy because you have a dirty dipey, the second i lay you on your changing table you stop fussing and start cooing and smiling! it's so cute. you have gotten better about pooping/peeing on us, although you still do it occasionally.

you love music and when your daddy sings to you. you love staring at lights. you love being in your carseat and going for walks in the stroller or drives in the car. if you are fussy and we have tried everything we can think of to console you, we will turn on the lights (so you can stare at them) and put you in your swing...3 of the 4 times we tried that it calmed you right down. you like to be flat on your back after you eat so we usually just put you on your playmat so you can talk to your "friends." as the weather has warmed up we have taken you outside more and you love it out there! usually you just fall right to sleep.

you are growing bigger and stronger by the day. i always worry about whether or not you are gaining enough weight. i could tell you had grown length-wise, but i always thought you seemed a bit on the small side. you proved me wrong though, which i am thrilled about! your stats at two months were...

weight: 11 lbs 10 oz (49th percentile)
height: 23 3/4 inches (80th percentile)
head circumference: 40.2 cm (56th percentile)

well baby finn, like i said earlier, i love you so dang much! you are my pride and joy and you have changed my whole life. i can't imagine what i would do without you little man, my life wouldn't be the same.

happy TWO months!

mom

..meeting miss madi..

dear finn,

miss madison mcconnel was born june 3, 2011, and today we drove up to tremonten to meet her! first thing i thought when i looked at her (besides thinking she is so adorable!), was "omg, she is tiny!" fact is, she isn't tiny...that's just how small a newborn baby is. that is about how small you were! well, you were never quite that small, 'member how you were a chunk?! of course you don't remember, but i sure do! jk.

anyway, you weren't too happy when we were up there because you had just had your shots. :( poor guy. you slept for a while and when you woke up you were kinda a grump. that's okay, cuz you had a good excuse. miss madi is so adorable, and i am so happy you already have another friend! one day we are going to enter a contest for "newborn baby with the most friends close in age" and you, my dear, are going to win!

love ya bubbs (that's your new nickname btw...pronounced buuuhhhbs - long drawn out uhhh)!

..your bodyguard..

dear finn,

this story is too cute not to share with you...

last weekend daddy's good friend jeff pyle was in town visiting so he stayed with us for the night. you and i were sitting up on mommy and daddy's bed while i was nursing you and claus was sitting right there with us, just like always. jeff brought his dog, bebe, with him and the dog was a little nuts...she really really wanted to play with your brothers, but they weren't having it. bebe came into our bedroom and couldn't figure out how to get out (the door from the hallway was closed but the door leading into the bathroom was open), so she just barked and yipped and howled and i didn't know how to make her stop so she kept at it. anyway, jeff came looking for her, and not realizing we were in there nursing he walked in...and when he did claus growled at him!!! hahahahahaha it was so funny and cute! your big bro phobs just sittin' on the bed, protecting us from intruders! gotta love that little guy!

love you mr. brother and every day i thank my lucky stars that your big brothers love you too!

..your best friends blessing..

dear finn,

last weekend, may 28th to be exact, we went down to american fork to attend the blessing of your bff, benjamin "krew" clark. daddy was so honored that he got to be in the circle for krew's blessing, and after krew's dad was done giving the blessing, your daddy came up to us and said, "i should start preparing finn's blessing." he is so excited to bless you!

after the blessing they had a luncheon at the church. you were a little angel just like always. you have everyone fooled finn - most of our friends think that you never cry and sleep all day! the first part is true - you rarely cry, but you don't sleep most of the day anymore. you are definately alert and awake for a good portion of the day. :)
anyway, krew's blessing was so special and i am glad we were able to attend.

..such a STUD..

dear finn,

now i have told you this before, but you dress top-notch. seriously, every time we go out and about someone comments on how cute you look. my personal belief is that someone with as good of looks as you have needs to have clothes of the same caliber. ;) and i mean let's be honest here, no kid of mine is ever going to not be dressed cute!

here is one of your studliest outfits....
well mr. finn, it looks to me like you already have brains to go along with your good looks and style. you are destined to be someone extremely important...let's face it, you already are important to me and so many others. :)

..your first movie..

dear finn,

a TON of good movies have come out since you were born...something borrowed, thor, fast 5, pirates of the caribbean 4, the hangover 2, kung fu panda 2, and i am probably forgetting many others. well, it's kinda hard to go to a movie with a baby! however, daddy and i thought that since you are such a good baby, it wouldn't be too difficult to take you. we would just need to bring a bottle so that if you got hungry we could feed you.

so the other day, we decided to take you to your first movie. now, i am not sure i should tell you which movie we decided on, because we are supposed to set a good example for you. :) we went during the day because we figured the least amount of people would be there at that time. we were a bit disappointed when we walked into the theater and there were about 10 people in it (we thought there would be way less). the movie started at 4:35 and according to your last feeding, you were supposed to be hungry around 5:00. and you were! we heard one little peep and hurried and got the bottle out and started feeding you. daddy was feeding you, and he said you were being difficult. ha ha he said you kept bouncing your head and pushing the bottle out of your mouth. well that was probably my fault, because the bottle was still pretty cold and you don't like your milk cold. picky little one already! jk :). so i took over, but i was getting a little worried if people could hear you - i never realized just how loud you are when you are sucking from a bottle. it is super cute, in my opinion, but i didn't think the people in the theater would think it was cute. so i took you out to the lobby to drink your bottle.

after about 10 minutes of being out in the lobby daddy came out and took over, except he just stood in the back of the theater and fed you until you were finished. well after you are done eating, you need your dipey changed...and then you usually like to talk and play...and ever since you started sleeping consistenly six hours through the night you don't take as long of naps after each meal so i wasn't certain that you would go back to sleep at all during the movie...so long story short, you and i just went and sat out in daddy's truck until the movie ended. and guess what? i wasn't even sad that i had to miss the movie. you are so much more fun and entertaining than any movie ever could be! we can wait for them to come out on dvd.
love you mr. man. we will give the movie theater another go someday, i promise.
